The CartoonBig Fat Whale is a weekly comic strip by Brian McFadden. It currently appears in the Boston Phoenix, Portland Phoenix and Daily Kos. It has appeared in the Cleveland Scene & Free Times, Metro Spirit, Chico Beat, Buffalo Beast, and many other national and international publications.

Big Fat Whale began as a GeoCities website in October 2001. In July 2002, the cartoon moved to this domain. Later that year, it began appearing regularly in Editorial Humor, a now-defunct Boston monthly.

There are two self-published Big Fat Whale mini-comics; The Lonely Captain's Erotic Scrimshaw, Sea Anomie and one large collection;Fun Stuff for Dum-Dums.

In 2006, Big Fat Whale was featured in the third installment of Ted Rall's Attitude series of books, Attitude 3: The New Subversive Online Cartoonists, and helped found Cartoonists With Attitude.

In addition to Big Fat Whale, Brian has been drawing the weekly feature "The Strip," for The New York Times' Sunday Review since June, 2011.

The CartoonistBrian McFadden was born and raised in Brockton, Massachusetts. He studied mechanical engineering at Johns Hopkins University, where he began the comic strip to escape the drudgery of computer-aided design and materials selection charts.

When has some free time, Brian dabbles in comedy writing and performing sketch comedy.

He's 33 and lives in Quincy, Massachusetts with his cat, Gizmo.
